The Law and Justice Interim Committee (LJIC) is a partisan committee of the Legislature that conducts interim studies related to law and justice topics. The committee also provides administrative rule review, draft legislation review, program evaluation, and oversight for the Department of Corrections (DOC), the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Office of State Public Defender (OPD). LJIC also serves as the liaison to the Judicial Branch of Montana.
The committee's statutory duties are in 5-5-226, MCA.

Interim Studies

The Legislative Council assigns studies to the LJIC for the 2023-2024 interim. Committee options and decisions on how to perform each study. More information about each study will be available on study pages linked below.

Committee Topics and Emerging Issues

The LJIC will determine over the course of the 2023-24 interim whether to pursue any legislative proposals related to its work.
