Education Interim Committee

The Education Interim Committee will be meeting Thursday-Friday, November 16-17, 2017, in Bozeman on the MSU campus. Please see the agenda, available on the committee website, for meeting times and locations. (Please note: The committee plans to proceed with this meeting unless there is an absolute conflict with any potential special session.)

The committee will visit Bozeman High School and Bridger Charter Academy on Thursday morning before convening on the MSU campus. This school visit is limited to committee members and confirmed guests—space is limited. Guests must be confirmed by November 9. If you wish to participate in the visit, please contact Pad McCracken (406-444-3595 or padmccracken@mt.gov).

Later Thursday morning, the committee will receive K-12 updates from the Office of Public Instruction, as well as on the new Stars Preschool Grant Program from the Governor’s Office. After lunch and a tour of the MSU campus, the committee will dive into gifted and talented education as part of the House Joint Resolution No. 1 study of education funding for students with special needs and examine educator recruitment and retention. Representatives from Montana’s educator preparation programs and other education professionals will participate in these conversations.

Friday morning the committee will meet jointly with the Board of Regents to discuss budget reductions, student financial aid programs, and dual enrollment. The Education Interim Committee will reconvene after the joint session to hear from schools and business partners about innovative work-based learning programs.

Senate members appointed to the committee are Tom Facey, D-Missoula; Edie McClafferty, D-Butte; Dan Salomon, R-Ronan; and Russ Tempel, R-Chester. House members are Fred Anderson, R-Great Falls; Jacob Bachmeier, D-Havre; Moffie Funk, D-Helena; and Don Jones, R-Billings. The committee is chaired by Sen. McClafferty with Rep. Anderson serving as vice chair.
