Senate

The Senate is one of 2 chambers of the Montana Legislature. The other is the House of Representatives.

The Senate and House are responsible for organizing and establishing rules to govern their respective chambers. The Senate is governed by Senate Rules and Joint Rules. The latter apply to both the House and Senate. Members of each chamber adopt new rules at the beginning of each legislative session.

Members

The Senate is made up of 50 members elected to 4-year terms. Montanans elect half of the 50 members every 2 years. If you're not sure who represents you in the Senate, see "Find a Montana Legislator."

Committees

There are 17 Senate committees, which meet on varying schedules to hear public comment on proposed legislation. All committee meetings are open to the public. Members of the Senate Finance and Claims Committee also serve on several joint subcommittees, which meet to review and debate state spending proposals.
