The Montana legislature meets for regular sessions every other year (beginning in January of odd-numbered calendar years) and the session is limited, by the Montana Constitution, to no more than 90 days. The legislature may meet at other times if a special session is called.

The period between regular sessions is referred to as the "interim" and during this time many legislators work on interim committees which study issues in detail, and develop legislation for the next regular session.

The House of Representatives is governed by the House Rules and the Joint Rules. (joint with the Senate).
