Law and Justice Interim Committee
2007-2008

The Law and Justice Interim Committee (LJIC) is a joint bipartisan committee of the legislature that meets between legislative sessions. The LJIC: (1) monitors the activities of the Department of Corrections, the Department of Justice, the Office of State Public Defender, and the Judicial Branch; (2) examines law and justice policy issues; and (3) makes recommendations to the full legislature. The LJIC's responsibilities include reviewing the administrative rules of assigned executive branch agencies (Corrections, Justice, and the Public Defender).

Detainee Medical Costs

On July 25, Sen. McGee appointed a five-member subcommittee to continue work on LC 7775 - clarifying responsibility for a person's medical costs when the person is injured while being pursued and detained by local law enforcement. The members are Sen. Laslovich (Chairman), Sen. McGee, Rep. Ebinger, Rep. Stoker, Rep., Hilbert. The Subcommittee will meet at the call of the chairman prior to September 15. A public notice will be provided as soon as the meeting is scheduled.

Jail Standards and Suicide Prevention

The three-member subcommittee of the LJIC appointed to develop a bill draft addressing mental health and suicide prevention standards for jails met July 17, 2008, in Bozeman and presented its recommendations to the full Committee on July 25, 2008. The full committee voted to accept the recommendations and continue to work on a bill draft to establish a pilot project for a suicide prevention network in Montana jails similar to the program established in Kentucky. The subcommittee has not been dissolved.

The three subcommittee members are Rep. Gary Perry (Chairman), Sen. Jent, and Rep. Ebinger.

These working groups met concurrently during the January 10-11, 2008, and February 28-29, 2008, meetings.

The working groups presented recommendations to the full committee at the February 29 meeting and were subsequently dissolved.
