Register by April 10 graphicThe first-ever Montana Teachers Institute on Representative Democracy and the Legislative Process will be held:

June 14-16, 2010
State Capitol, Helena

The free professional development program is aimed at Montana teachers of social studies, history, government, and civics who are assigned to teach in the 2010-2011 school year. Participation will be limited to 25 teachers; preference will be given to high school and middle school teachers who represent the cultural and geographic diversity of the state. 20 renewal units will be offered through the Office of Public Instruction.

The teachers institute will include presentations by legislators and legislative staff, as well as a mock committee hearing. Participants also will get hands-on training in the Project Citizen and Teaching Representative Democracy in America programs and learn how to incorporate them into the classroom. Curriculum guides, lesson plans, and instructional materials will be provided.

Goals

  • Encourage and enhance teaching in Montana about representative democracy and the role of the state legislature within a representative democracy;
  • Prepare teachers to teach active citizenship in their classrooms;
  • Help remove barriers between citizens and their government; and
  • Address cynicism and negativity about government.

Photo of Alan Rosenthal, Professor of Public PolicyAlan Rosenthal, Ph.D., is a professor of public policy at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University in New Jersey. His research and teaching interests are state legislatures and state politics. He is the author of numerous books, including The Decline of Representative Democracy. He will speak on the role of the state legislature in a representative democracy.
